Colonised, looted, enslaved and tortured were the people of the ‘third world.’ Economic superpowers turned to rubble. Independent nations were then born utterly incapable of standing on their own two feet. Those who weren’t were later bombed beyond recognition. But it was alright. Why? Because they were ‘given’ democracy. They were suddenly destined to be ‘great’ — destined to follow in the footsteps of those who were. But why hasn’t it worked out like that?

Because democracy was never meant to work for them in the first place.

There is nothing inherent in democracy that is poverty-inducing. It’s a model of governance. However, there are two major reasons why democracy can’t lift the downtrodden to the pinnacle of success. First, the fact that democracy was never the reason why the rich and powerful became rich and powerful. Secondly, the great powers ‘bringing democracy’ to the ‘third world’ is nothing more than their attempt to keep the latter poor. Period.

How did the ‘First World’ become the ‘First World’?
