Trump, in some ways, was a blessing for the Democrats. They thought they wouldn't have to work as hard anymore, simply because - well - what's the alternative?
I've also come across many written pieces in centrist/left media all asking the same thing: "Biden's economy is doing great, but why hasn't the public noticed?" Maybe it's because, as you said, they're paying twice as much for bread as they used to.
As far as Trump goes, a return to the WH for him seems increasingly likely (although any victor is probably only going to win by the slimmest of margins). Here's some interesting data from Pew Research which shows Trump is believed by the electorate to be both more mentally and physically able to do the job, that he's almost on par with Biden as far as their perceived abilities to pick good advisors goes, but that Biden is ahead when it comes to acting "ethically" or respecting democratic norms.
At any other time, the last two could've given Biden the edge he needed, but it seems after Gaza that "ethical" badge is going to come with a big asterisk.
