This is perhaps the most interesting way to look at this that I've come across.

The slogan "take back control" does indeed seem to symbolise The Hero's Journey. And like you said, our attraction to that narrative is deeply embedded within us. From ancient stories, usually religious ones, to Hollywood, we're fascinated with the idea of someone fighting their harsh reality to emerge victorious.

It would definitely explain why the underlying narrative to Brexit was so succesful:

"Here you are, the British, living under the tyranny of the Europeans. And you must act - and act now - if you want to reclaim your country."

It does explain a lot, doesn’t it..
The Hero’s Journey is the narrative that will destroy us, if we are unable to change it.
