The fact that it doesn’t apply to genuinely evil people goes without saying.

As you point out, it would be the equivalent of saying “it’s not Hitler that’s bad, it’s his deeds.” And if you don’t call them out, you’d essentially be giving people like them a free pass.

But for the most part, for the vast majority of people, it does. Deal with them the same way you would a Nazi and you would, albeit unknowingly, be contributing to division.
