Something, somewhere, has to shock the system.

Trumpism without Trump only works if he loses by a narrow margin. It'll make their narrative of election fraud (as far as the base is concerned) believable. And so the circus will continue for a while.

If they still decide to go down that route even after an electoral hammering, they'll have no one to blame for the ensuing political disaster other than themselves.
